State associations have succumbed to political pressure or financial accounting, says Manvendra Singh of AIFF poll results

New Delhi, September 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rajasthan Football Association President Manvendra Singh on Friday lamented the lack of support from other states, saying state associations had succumbed to political pressure or financial accounting.

Former India goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey beat Bhaichung Bhutia 33-1 in a one-sided election for president, while N. A Haris beat Manvendra Singh 29-5 to become vice-president of the country’s football body. Kipa Ajay will be the new treasurer of AIFF after defeating Gopalakrishna Kosaraju 32-1, with a vote declared invalid.

“There are only two reasons why someone will change their position. You know, there is pressure for political reasons. Or there is pressure because of financial accounting. Think of any why someone would change position like they change position,” Manvendra told IANS.

Asked to comment on the AIFF poll results, he said: “It’s a sad day for football in India. If a football icon like Bhaichung is defeated like this, you can understand where we are heading. And that kind of judgment is a reflection of why football is where it is. The same administrators had pledged not to let any outside experience into football.”

“And obviously, you know, that engagement didn’t last more than a week because they changed their stance quite drastically and quite drastically 180 degrees and the judgment is driven by interests other than football. And the As you know, last night a union government minister walked into a hotel where state association representatives were staying and stayed with them for a few hours. A union minister was urging them to not to vote for Bhaichung and they succumbed to that exhortation. It’s a shame; obviously the interests are other than football. It’s a sad day for football and it can only get darker.” he told IANS.

Manvendra said public sentiment was overwhelmingly in favor of Bhaichung, but he is still in shock at how the situation has changed overnight.

“It’s deeply disappointing. It’s a shame. It’s a disgrace to India and Indian football. Public sentiment is overwhelmingly in favor of Bhaichung and you know, that’s reflected in the way people push him But it’s a bit of a bad reflection on the administration of football as a whole,” he said.
